Public Sector Banks write off ₹7 lakh crore in NPAs, recover over ₹5 lakh crore, but recovery record remains low.

Public sector banks’ write-offs touched ₹7 lakh cr in FY20-FY25

Over 54 crore accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) as of November 20, 2024. However, 11.30 crore accounts, holding Rs 14,750 crore, are currently inoperative. Public sector banks have seen a decline in inoperative account percentages. Efforts are underway to reduce these numbers and simplify account reactivation.

Public sector banks held Rs 3.16 lakh crore in gross non-performing assets (NPAs) as of September 30, representing 3.09% of outstanding loans. Private sector banks reported Rs 1.34 lakh crore in NPAs (1.86%). 580 large borrowers were classified as wilful defaulters. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code recovered Rs 3.55 lakh crore from resolved cases, against claims of Rs 11.
