Sensex, Nifty trade higher; oil & gas shares surge

The key domestic indices traded with strong gains in the mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 23,350 mark. Oil & gas shares jumped for the fourth consecutive trading session. At 14:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, surged 546.15 points or 0.71% to 76,902.45. The Nifty 50 index rallied 174.75 points or 0.75% to 23,365.40. The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index added 1.03% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index jumped 1.71%. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,768 shares rose and 1,201 shares fell. A total of 138 shares were unchanged. Buzzing Index: The Nifty Oil & Gas index added 2.24% to 10,586.10. The index jumped 5.69% for the four consecutive trading sessions. Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (up 4.46%), GAIL (India) (up 4.39%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (up 3.92%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (up 3.7%), Indian Oil Corporation (up 2.24%), Petronet LNG (up 1.68%), Oil India (up 1.47%), Gujarat Gas (up 1.32%), Adani Total Gas (up 1.3%) and Aegis Logistics (up 0.83%) advanced. Numbes to Track: The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper advanced 1.46% to 6.737 as compared with the previous close of 6.747. In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 86.0500, compared with its close of 86.3600 during the previous trading session. MCX Gold futures for the 4 April 2025 settlement shed 0.52% to Rs 88,189. The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.20% to 104.03. The United States 10-year bond yield shed 0.09% to 4.229. In the commodities market, Brent crude for May 2025 settlement advanced 15 cents or 0.21% to $72.15 a barrel. Stocks in Spotlight: Adani Energy Solutions advanced 2.66% after the company said that it has won a power transmission project worth Rs 2,800 crore in Gujarat. Adani Energy Solutions wins Rs 2,800 cr transmission project in Gujarat

Adani Energy Solutions (AESL) has won a power transmission project in Gujarat, which will supply green electrons for manufacturing Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia in Mundra, Gujarat. The project which will cost ~Rs 2,800 crore, will be delivered to the nation in 36 months. This project Transmission System for Green Hydrogen/Ammonia Manufacturing Potential in Mundra, Gujarat' involves upgrading the Navinal (Mundra) electrical substation by adding two large 765/400kV transformers. Additionally, a 75 km long 765kV double-circuit line will be constructed to connect this substation to the Bhuj substation. The project will see the addition of 150 cKM of transmission lines and 3,000 MVA of transformation capacity to AESL's overall transmission infrastructure, taking them to 25,928 cKM and 87,186 MVA, respectively. AESL won the project under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism and PFC Consulting Limited was the bid process coordinator. Manappuram Finance soars as Bain Capital to take joint control

Bain Capital has entered into definitive agreements to acquire joint control in Manappuram Finance, through its affiliates i.e., BC Asia Investments XXV and BC Asia Investments XIV (Bain Capital) in partnership with the existing promoters who will continue to stay fully invested. This strategic investment aims to fuel the company's next phase of growth and drive transformation by enhancing operational excellence, strengthening leadership, and expanding its presence across key segments. As part of the transaction, Bain Capital will be investing about Rs 4,385 crore to acquire an 18% stake on a fully diluted basis via preferential allotment of equity & warrants at a price of Rs 236 per share. The transaction will trigger a mandatory open offer for the purchase of another 26% stake in the company on an expanded capital basis (excluding warrants). The open offer price has been fixed at Rs 236 per share. Based on the open offer subscription, Bain Capital's stake post the investment will vary between 18% to 41.7% on a fully diluted basis (including shares to be issued pursuant to exercise of warrants). Existing Promoters will hold a 28.9% stake in the company post the investment on a fully diluted basis (including shares to be issued pursuant to exercise of warrants). Transaction is expected to close by Q2-Q3 of next fiscal subject to receipt of necessary approvals. Bain Capital will be classified as promoter of company post investment and will jointly control company with existing promoters. Founded in 1949, Manappuram Finance is a leading non-banking financial institution and the 2nd largest financier in the gold loan segment in India. It has grown to serve over 6.59 million customers through an extensive network of 5,357 branches and a workforce of 50,795 employees. It has expanded beyond gold loans into microfinance, vehicle finance, housing finance and SME lending, establishing itself as a diversified financial services provider. On a consolidated basis, Manappuram Finance's net profit fell 50.76% to Rs 282.06 crore on 10.14% increase in total income to Rs 2,562.63 crore in Q3 December 2024 over Q3 December 2023. Among the components of the BSE Metal index, Jindal Stainless Ltd (down 4.32%), National Aluminium Company Ltd (down 4.04%),Hindustan Zinc Ltd (down 2.82%),NMDC Ltd (down 2.51%),Vedanta Ltd (down 1.54%), were the top losers. Among the other losers were Hindalco Industries Ltd (down 1.28%), APL Apollo Tubes Ltd (down 0.91%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (down 0.9%), and Tata Steel Ltd (down 0.79%). Nifty trades above 23,350; European mkt decline

The key equity benchmarks traded with major gains in the afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 23,350 mark. Media, auto, and pharma stocks declined while metal, consumer durables, and FMCG shares declined. At 13:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, surged 637.58 points or 0.84% to 76,985.64. The Nifty 50 index rallied 192.35 points or 0.83% to 23,383.95. The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index added 0.97% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index jumped 1.52%. The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,767 shares rose and 1,157 shares fell. A total of 150 shares were unchanged. Gainers & Losers: Bajaj Finance (up 3.23%), Coal India (up 3.08%), NTPC (up 2.97%), Larsen and Toubro (up 2.94%) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) (up 2.85%) were the major Nifty gainers. Indusind Bank (down 1.36%), Infosys (down 1.25%), Hindalco Industries (down 1.00%), Bajaj Finserv (down 0.81%), and Bharat Electronics (down 0.77%) were the major Nifty losers. IndusInd Bank fell 1.36%. The bank said that its board has decided to appoint an independent professional firm to conduct a comprehensive investigation to identify the root cause of the discrepancies observed in its derivative portfolio. The independent professional firm will also assess the correctness and impact of the accounting treatment of the derivative contracts with regard to the prevailing accounting standards/guidance, identify any lapses, and establish accountability in relation to the discrepancies identified in the bank's derivative portfolio. Stocks in Spotlight: Hindustan Unilever (HUL) rose 0.21%. The company announced that its board of directors has approved an investment to acquire a 14.3% stake in Lucro Plastecycle, a key player in recycled flexible plastics. Mamata Machinery soared 13.08% after the company announced that it has been granted a US patent for an invention entitled 'Cross Sealing Device' by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the term of 20 years. Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) advanced 2.80% after the company announced that it had received a letter of intent (LOI) from Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) for the EPC package for the 1x800 MW Ukai Extension Unit-7. Rail Vikas Nigam added 1.44% after the company announced that it had received a letter of acceptance (LoA) from the National Highway Authority of India for a project worth Rs 554.64 crore. Tamilnad Mercantile Bank rose 1.22% after the bank announced the appointment of Sanjoy Kumar Goel as chief financial officer (CFO), effective from 20 March 2025, on a contractual basis. Texmaco Rail & Engineering jumped 4.21% after the company announced that it has invested in a wholly-owned subsidiary, Texmaco Middle East DMCC (Texmaco MED). The paid-up share capital of Texmaco MED is AED 50,000, with Texmaco Rail & Engineering holding 100% ownership of the subsidiary. The company also clarified that the promoter and promoter group have no other interest in the newly incorporated entity. Global Markets: European shares declined as investors are digesting monetary policy updates that came from multiple central banks in the region, as well as the U.S. Federal Reserve Asian stocks tumbled on Friday as investors remained cautious about prolonged high-interest rates and the potential for increased trade tariffs under President Donald Trump. Earlier this week, Trump announced that broad reciprocal tariffs, along with sector-specific duties, would take effect on April 2, fueling uncertainty in global markets. Japanese consumer price index inflation grew slightly more than expected in February, with a rise in underlying inflation fueling bets that the Bank of Japan will keep raising interest rates this year. The national CPI rose 3.7% year-on-year, slightly cooling from January's 4.0%. Core CPI, which excludes fresh food prices, increased 3.0%, compared to 3.2% in January. A more refined core measure, excluding both fresh food and energy, climbed 2.6%, up from 2.5% the previous month. Inflation is still well above the BOJ's 2% target. The Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged on Thursday, maintaining the benchmark rate at 4.5%. This decision comes as the U.K. economy grapples with global trade uncertainties and the potential for stagnation domestically. U.S. stock indices reversed early gains to close lower on Thursday, hovering near six-month lows as investor sentiment remained fragile. The S&P 500 fell 0.2% on Friday. The NASDAQ Composite fell 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed flat. Microchip Technology Inc. tumbled 6.5% after announcing plans to raise $1.35 billion through convertible stock to repay debt and enter a capped call transaction. Darden Restaurants surged 5% after reporting strong Q3 fiscal 2025 earnings. Trump's tariff strategy remains a major market concern, especially as he wavers on measures against Canada and Mexico. Meanwhile, China, the eurozone, and other affected regions have outlined retaliatory tariffs, heightening fears of a full-blown trade war. The US Labor Department data showed that first-time unemployment claims inched up last week.
